In 2012, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at ending the world's social, economic, political, and environmental challenges. Some of these goals are to eradicate poverty and achieve zero hunger by ensuring more than 736 million people living below the UN’s poverty line, that is, US$1.90 a day, satisfy their needs by having an access to sufficient and nutritious food, good sanitation, and clean drinking water. We understand that these goals cannot be achieved if key players work in isolation. That’s why Help Africa Battle Against Hunger (HABA Hunger) was created.
become a volunteerFounded in July 2021, HABA Hunger is a nonprofit organization seeking to eliminate child hunger in Africa. With headquarters in Houston, Texas, we champion the wellbeing of the African child generously providing nutritious groceries to families with children who are in dire need.
As a strategic organization, we work with other philanthropic organizations and individuals to implement a spectrum of programs that ensure every child gets an opportunity to grow strong and healthy in order to conquer their dreams.
While developing the SDGs, the UN identified Africa as one of the areas facing severe hunger. Data from the World Vision indicate that close to 40% of children in sub-Saharan Africa are facing starvation and malnutrition. It is predicted that, by late 2021, about 1.15 million children from Nigeria will be suffering from acute to severe malnutrition.
At HABA Hunger, we understand that the number of food insecure children in Nigeria and the rest of Africa is likely to continue spiking amid the hard economic conditions and the current pandemic. As such, we take action by helping hungry children and families meet their immediate and long-term food needs.
Currently, we are implementing a program aimed at providing pre-packed grocery boxes filled with nutritious food items such as whole grains, dairy, fruits, vegetables, eggs, canned foods, meat, and fresh produce to families with children facing hunger.
